The Data Behind Deep Space Exploration

5809939090_76e67df560_zThe space race began decades ago, but it has now reached unprecedented new levels that are scaled on a near-daily basis. Back then, it was nations getting into space. Now, that has transformed to what level of space nations can cross. With each nation’s every attempt (successful or otherwise) to cross newer, farther frontiers in space, come larger and larger volumes of data. The number of earth-gazing satellites has nearly doubled in 2014 alone. Open Data: The Final Frontier? Certainly, the instruments used to record this data are incredibly advanced. But the fact remains that there is more information sent than machines have the capacity to interpret. Openly sourcing this data might open it up to new developers and professionals who could potentially create solutions to dealing with this data. It...

How a Coder Became the CEO of One of America’s Fastest Growing Companies

How a Coder Became the CEO of One of America's Fastest Growing CompaniesWe got in touch with Jeff Thorness, CEO and Founder of Forte Payments, through the FinDEVr Conference in San Francisco. As Founder of the company he bootstrapped the venture from inception in 1998 to a 115-people operation in 2014. Over time the company has become a leader in omni-channel payments processing and also has consistently ranked among the Inc.5000 “America’s Fastest Growing Private Companies” in the past 7 years. Who are you and what do you do? I’m Jeff Thorness, CEO and Founder of Forte Payments. I’d say I’m a coder by trade who has taken on the responsibilities of a CEO and just likes to dive into R&D type stuff. I am sure that this also influenced how closely we are working with developers in the financial services space...

Enlitic – Healthcare and Big Data Amalgam – Picks up $2M in Seed Fund to Propel Diagnostics Innovation

Enlitic - Healthcare and Big Data Amalgam - Picks up $2M in Seed Fund to Propel Diagnostics InnovationEnlitic, a San Francisco-based startup that is tapping Big Data to innovate in Medical Diagnostics, has landed $2 million seed round at VentureBeat’s HealthBeat conference on Monday. The round was led by Amplify with participation from Data Collective. Utilizing machine learning to carry out accurate medical diagnostics faster, the young firm, started in August, wants to provide the tools that allow physicians to fully utilize the vast stores of medical data collected today, regardless of what form they are in – such as medical images, doctors’ notes, and structured lab tests to glean patterns and subtle insights which might have a positive impact . To this end the firm is building on state-of-the-art deep learning algorithms and partnering with top research hospitals and medical device manufacturers. The company has established...

Debunking the Myths of Online Dating

4598569232_0352e43676_zI was recently dared to register for an online dating account, and just to prove that I’m not actually an asexual library hermit whose love affairs will only ever be with Tolstoy and Tennyson, I did it. Unfortunately, my love affair with OkCupid was short-lived; I was about to exit the site altogether before the button “Boost Profile!” caught my eye. Intrigued, I clicked on the category for ‘10 Boosts’, and this showed up: “With extra momentum in our algorithms, we’ll show you to more people, faster. Pay an extra £1.05 per boost!” Wow. I can now pay to have an algorithm tweaked in favour of my chances at love. Talk about technology taking leaps and strides. But all jokey cynicism aside, my mini-foray into online dating got me thinking...

Argyle Data Taps Existing NSA & Facebook Tech in Flagship Product to Counter Fraud in Real-Time

6876230607_0727ebdaac_zArgyle Data, a real-time fraud analytics startup, has rolled out its flagship anti-fraud software, alongside an announcement of $4.5 million in funding to help companies detect and combat fraud through machine learning and real-time analytics. Dubbed AgyleDB, the application taps NSA’s open source Accumulo database technology to “perform deep-packet inspection and create massive databases from that data,” while using Facebook’s Presto SQL query engine to let users analyze that data stored in Hadoop and “automate future queries against live data,” reports GigaOm. Statistics reveal that mobile communication companies alone lose more than $46 billion each year, while 53% of financial services organizations take up to 8 hours to detect fraud, resulting in billions lost. One of the major problems with fraud detection is the turnaround time. Most fraud detection systems...

Google Adds 2 Oxford University Startups to its Artificial Intelligence Brain Bank

Google Adds 2 Oxford University Startups to its Artificial Intelligence Brain BankCharting the next step in its Artificial Intelligence endeavour, Google has acquired two prominent Oxford startups to join the Google DeepMind team meanwhile making a substantial contribution to establish a research partnership with the Computer Science Department and the Engineering Department at Oxford University. Dark Blue Labs was founded earlier this year by Prof Nando de Freitas, Prof Phil Blunsom, Dr Edward Grefenstette and Dr Karl Moritz Hermann, to understand “deep structured and unstructured representations of data to make intelligent products, including natural language understanding, a reality.” Partnering with Google DeepMind, they will be spearheading efforts to enable machines to better understand what users are saying to them, reports Google. Vision Factory is the other startup joining the DeepMind team. Founded by Dr Karen Simonyan, Max Jaderberg and Prof Andrew...
